I’ve never done this before, but this is as critical a moment as was the passage of the Enabling Acts in 1933 Germany. Here’s the email I got this morning from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:
Thomas,
Please call your Senators right now.
The continuing resolution that will be voted on in the Senate today codifies much of this chaos that Elon Musk is wreaking havoc on the federal government.
It sacrifices and completely eliminates Congressional authority in order to review these impulsive Trump tariffs that he's switching on and off.
And on top of that for folks who are concerned about effectiveness in government, this Republican extreme spending bill removes all of the guardrails and all of the accountability measures to ensure that money is being spent in the way that Congress has directed for it to be spent.
It sacrifices Congressional authority and it is deeply partisan.
It is almost unthinkable why Senate Democrats would vote to hand the few pieces of leverage that we have away for free when we've been sent here to protect Social Security, protect Medicaid, and protect Medicare.
Thank you for taking action today,
Alexandria
I also recommend you read Josh Marshall’s post over at Talking Points Memo, in which he calls Chuck Schumer a “weak man and a fool.” https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/black-thursday-in-the-democratic-senate-an-explainer
The phone number for the Senate is 202-224-3121. Let them hear from you!
Thom
Thanks for posting, I shared on my socials. Dems are worried about the politics of it, that they'll be blamed for the shutdown. As if this were a normal time. One concern I do share is that if the govt is shut down, nothing will stop Musk from accessing and wiping out everything, making it virtually impossible to restore. it's a lose-lose situation we're in, and I can see both sides, but on balance, I'd rather see a shut down. Voters won't remember in 2026 anyway.
